Hi! My name is Melissa and I am a school counseling graduate student that is currently in my first field placement and will be graduating in May. I decided to create this blog to share some counseling hits and misses that I have found during my time in school. I look forward to hearing about some of your ideas and experiences as well.
So, a little about me....
Like I said, I am a graduate student at a smaller college in the St. Louis Metro area and I am about to graduate! Yay! I am 27 years old, married to a great man and we have two kids. I like to make the joke that I must have a kid for every degree I receive. I had my son as a freshmen in undergrad and my daughter in the middle of my masters. While I am interning at my field placement sites I am also working full time as a Pharmacy Tech which means my house is almost always a mess and I can't remember what day it is at times. I like to spend my free time crocheting and I find that it really helps me to focus on what I am doing in that moment, not on what is coming up. I also enjoy baking and shopping.
I received my Bachelor's in Psychology from McKendree University in 2011 after some time spent with a secondary education and history double major. I was lucky enough to randomly sign up for an intro to psychology class with an amazing instructor and I didn't look back after changing my major. During my time with Dr. Kemp, I was able to volunteer to help her with a grant project she was leading at a local high-needs high school. I worked along with her and two graduate students to help a group of girls get ready for college. We developed their writing and research skills as well as lend a kind ear to the problems they were facing. It was during this time that I realized I could best serve students not as their teacher, but as their counselor. I owe everything to Dr. Kemp and those girls and I couldn't be happier.
To end my posts, I like to hear from some of you!
How did you find yourself in school counseling?
